Back

Money Jeans Back Pocket

In our constant search for new and exciting brands, this spring/summer Scotts introduces cool, premium brand, Money into five of our stores across the country. The brand, a favourite with English and Italian football stars and musicians Jay Z and Ian Brown, is now available in the following stores - Trafford Centre, Meadowhall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Chester South and Harley, Stoke on Trent. So look out for the iconic Money Signature and King Ape graphics on the rails.

Founded in 2003 by British graphic designers, Melvyn De Villiers and Nick Cordell, their range of eight t-shirt designs were immediately snapped up by Ships Department Store in Japan and met with enthusiasm at the US Trade Show at Magic in Las Vegas. In the same year Money made big news with their first demins, which included a $100 bill in the back pocket!

Over the next few years there were commissions from Def Jam, Rocafella and De La Soul. Japanese Designer Takashi Marjuo joined the team, the brand appearred in 30 stores in Italy and Money’s Cuban jeans with a three peso note picturing Che Guevara were much sought after.

Rarely out of the fashion news, in 2006, Money hit the headlines when they came up with their ‘beyond premium collection’ Money750. This included jeans with 18ct gold rivets and the best salvaged denim in the world, and The Vicious Belt which went on sale in Selfridges for £20,000. The Vicous Belt? Three rows of 18ct gold rivets weighing over half a kilo, signed by members of the Sex Pistols and finally worn by TI at the MTV Awards in New York. In 2007 Money launched world wide in Harvey Nicholls stores, The Beckhams were spotted in the brand and negotiations began for collaborations with G-shock, Karrimor, Kangol and Burlingtons , Money featured in UK Movie, Rollin with the Nines, and Briant Briggs helped to set up an American distribution deal.

So now its 2008, the spring/summer collection includes tees, shorts, jersey, denim, knitwear, outerwear and accessories. Sef, The Troubadours, Sigma Crew, Bashy Black Boys and Trey Songz have all been spotted wearing pieces from the current collection.

And what’s the story behind the king ape logo? Melvyn De V won’t lie to you, he says ‘It just looks nice … we needed a logo so we made one.” So now you know, By the way if you fancy winning a Money Diamante Zip Hoody visit their site before 5th May 2008.
