Fred Perry
Frederick Perry was born in Stockport, England in 1909, and took up tennis at the age of 18. He became a Wimbledon champion three times. In the late 1940s he was approached by Tibby Wegner, an Austrian footballer who had invented an anti-perspirant device worn on the wrist. Perry made some modifications, and the first sweatband was born. Perry and Wegner then decided to manufacture whilte polo shirts with the now-famous laurel logo stitched into the left breast, and thus the Fred Perry brand was born. The laurel logo was based upon a previous Wimbledon logo. The Fred Perry brand now caters for men’s and women’s fashion and accessories in varied colours, as well as still making the traditional white polo shirt. The pieces retain a charm from the 1940s and 1950s, with wool and other natural fabrics, rounded collars and buttons and muted colours. They also sell footwear; tennis shoes and plimsolls as well as knitwear and jackets for men, women and children.
