Once upon a time in Minneapolis, there was an underwear and military supply company named Munsingwear, who revolutionised the golf shirt. One day one of the salesmen saw a colony of penguins in the window of a New York taxidermists. So he bought one, and Pete the stuffed (literally!) penguin became their mascot, and logo for their golf shirts.
Their first golf shirt, 'the 1955' had a ribbed slice of fabric to the underarms so the shirt wouldn't rip during vigorous golf swings. Many American people of note wore them, for example President Nixon.
